My name is Tamara, I’m Vera Lúcia’s daughter. I’d like to inform you about my mother’s death in the last June12th. 2008. She died from complications on her cancer treatment. I do know she would like so much that I let you know about this, because you represented an important part of her life.

Altering Death

This blog should be called Altering Death. I have pancreatic cancer, I started chemotherapy two weeks ago and I was already taken to the hospital with an opportunist infection this week-end.

To make art is rare a luxury these. I try to make some things in the moments when I feel strong enough. Unfortunately since the diagnosis in January, it has been more and more difficult to have time to paint, to decoupage or make my dear Altered books.

If somebody is reading this blog out there, please understand that I am terrified. Not with death, because it is as a friend said about it, “it will be as coming back home", the "dwelling of the spirit", where all the matrices of the art will be waiting for me. What terrifies me is the path that I will have to tread here on earth until arriving there. Pain, much pain, so much pain that I didn’t know that I could support. Suffering, sadness; to see other sick people in different stages of the illness; the hours in hospitals for a long list of illnesses associated with cancer , hours in the clinic for chemotherapy, nausea, weakness.

I pray to the God to give me courage to face my ordeal until the end and pray to God to give my family and friends the necessary courage, strength and love to support me. And I ask you who are reading this blog, whichever your religious beliefs are, please pray for me.

Altered Book Spring

This altered book is my homage to spring and Easter time. I could only finish it right now. I have been going and coming from hospital since January it make very difficult doing art in a regular basis as I always did before. For example, my Valentine’s book is being finish yet. Today I arrived from hospital after complications with chemotherapy. I feeling a little better now and decided to publish this altered art piece.

Decoupage purses

These are 3 decoupage purses I did lately. I was given the tiny purses, they had something written on them, so I painted the written part with matte acrylic black paint and glued the vintage pictures from a beautiful Brazilian decoupage paper. Then I applied 5 coats of matte acrylic varnish. The picture blended very well with the purse fabric. It is all I want of a good decoupage piece.

This is my latest painting. Egyptian Goddess Bast holding a Siamese cat. This is a recurring theme in my art. This dark beauty symbolizes the mysteries of ancient Egypt and the cat is my Titi.

Saint Mary Magdalele and the artist

Early this year I was caught by Saint Mary Magdalene. I was thinking of her all the time. I had read some of the modern books about her but they had not impressed me. The inspiration just came to me as many others. I just had to paint Mary or I would go crazy. All the time I thought of her I saw a face, a very sad face, the face that saw Jesus die in the cross. It made my heart bleed. Some months passed till I could draw the face on a canvas and start painting. Meanwhile I kept on reading about her and got the gospel that is attributed to her, one of the Gnostic gospels. It is incomplete but shows the image of a tender woman yet a leader.
Then I did other 4 paintings of her, each with a meaning to me. In one she holds the alabaster jar, with the perfume she used to anoint Jesus feet, another shows her with her hidden gospel, another shows her in France, where it is said she died. The last one shows her with the Holy Grail. All interpretations of the paintings are open to you.
Here I am posting the analysis done by Allyson Erland, a collector of Magdalene art and who owns the 5 paintings dome by me.

“I wrote a little personal analysis concerning the paintings earlier today before I received this e-mail. I thought you might enjoy it so here it is.

Personal Meditations and Reflections on the Magdalene Paintings

After spending time in the presence of your Magdalene’s I thought I’d share some of my thoughts with you, the artist.

Painting #1 (“Intimate Mary”): I see this one as the most intimate and untraditional of the four and my personal favorite. I find her face absolutely beautiful, so gentle and welcoming even though seemingly expressionless. Her eyes are soft and inviting but somehow piercing at the same time. I can feel her examining me from within, discerning my innermost secrets.

Painting #2 (“Iconic Mary”): The style of this one reminds me of an Eastern orthodox icon. As in the first painting her gaze is positioned straight ahead, however she has lost the personal intimacy and emotion permeating the original. Her closeness to her audience has been replaced by a more otherworldly look, as though she doesn’t really see you but is looking beyond to something of a more spiritual, intangible nature.

Painting #3 (“Gnostic Mary”): In this piece you’ve adopted a De Vinci look. Magdalene is envisioned as the ‘Mona Lisa’ with the addition of the alabaster jar in her hands. An intriguing choice since De Vinci was deeply influenced by Gnostic symbolism and beliefs, most likely a closet Gnostic himself well informed in the “Mysteries of Magdalene”. There’s the possibility that the Mona Lisa was Magdalene incognito.

Painting #4 (“Pastoral Mary”): Though I’ve only viewed this image on-line it’s easy to see that the pastel coloring gives a softer, soothing feel to this piece. I also like the way you distanced your perspective to include more than just Magdalene’s face and shoulders. The way her left hand is reaching for her veil in a gesture to cover her countenance from prying eyes is very seductive. This one may eventually become my favorite.

Comparison of the Four: The first Magdalene is warm, vulnerable and accessible, the second beautiful but remote and transcendent, the third secretive and distracted and the fourth calm but somewhat shy and guarded. I think you’ve really captured the essence of Mary Magdalene in your artwork, especially in the first and fourth painting.

Painting #5 Very beautiful! I immediately noticed how bold and confident Mary is as the "Keeper of the Grail Mysteries". Not as all the shy, lenitive Magdalene as she appeared the previous painting. I also like the choice of a blue dress representing water and baptism into new life for the one who discovers the Grail's secret.

ATCs Altered Keyring Books

I had this ideas when I saw these little plastic things used for identification. They are exactly, 2,5"x3"5 and they have a rim . I punched a hole in 7 of them, put my ATCs inside and closed them with a beautiful metallic ring I found in a shop where we buy pieces for jewelry making. Then I embellished this ring with beads and tassels. Some beads on the "Fairies of Beauty" are hand made and crackled. I just have to buy them. They are so beautiful!

This book was commissioned for the Sanchez Altered Art Collection. Since animals of any knind are a fascinating subject, it was a pleasure to work in the book. The only problem was to delimitate the size of the project. I am very happy with the results!!!

ALTERED BOOK SAINT MARY MAGDALENE

This Altered Book about Saint Mary Magdalene is the culmination of months of research and spiritual growth. I became very inspired by Mary Magdalene in the beginning of this year and did some paintings about her. Meanwhile I was researching all the artistic renderings of the saint down the ages. I became very acquainted with the accounts about her life and the paintings done by many of the greatest artists of all time. At some point I decided that I had to put all my research into a medium that is familiar and very dear to me, and it is altered books.

I used several reproductions of the most beautiful renderings of Mary Magdalene, backgrounds made from Brazilian papers, golden inks, crackles, acrylic paints, and quotations from the Gospels. The pages are sturdy and heavy.

The cover is done with transparent crackles and a niche/frame to embellish the tender picture of Mary. It is all painted in gold to simulate old metal. (You can find a tutorial about it in this blog.)

Fake Leather

Take a piece of fun foam, plastic, plastic that fakes leather, cardboard or whatever you want to turn into fake leather. I took a piece of beige fun foam here.

Crush some sheets of paper, any paper, newspaper, or magazine sheets.
Now have them uncrushed.

Paint a piece of your background with a brown acrylic paint. I used a dark brown but you can use a shade of brown that you like most.

Immediately, press a piece of uncrushed paper on the fresh paint retiring the excess.

Do it on your entire piece. Allow it dry. You can varnish it using a matte acrylic varnish.

You can see here some examples I did lately. Depending on the color of the background piece and the shade of brown , you will have a totally different result. I hope you enjoy this little tutorial and tell me how your fake leather technique worked!

How to make a trunk envelope book for ATC/ACEO

Take 10 envelopes, measures are 4, 5” x3”. Glue them through the middle making an accordion.

Cut the front and back of the trunk on fun foam or on a flexible cardboard. Use the template shown here. Measures are 5, 5’x 8” and 3, 5’ x 5, 5.

Cut 2 pieces of hard cardboard. Measures are 3, 5’ x 5, 5.
Cut the 2 top corners of the larger piece of fun foam in a rounded shape. It will be the lid of the trunk.

Embellish the fun foam parts with stitches. They can be real stitches or made with white acrylic paint. If you are using cardboard you can embellish it with collage, decoupage, fabric or whatever your want. The results are always beautiful.

Sew a button to the smaller part of the trunk and cut a buttonhole on the front.

Glue the cardboard pieces to the fun foam parts. Now glue the accordion envelopes to the cardboards. The trunk is ready.

Embellish the trunk using beads, fibers or ribbons.

Put your ATCs inside the envelope. The trunk stands alone and it is a lovely piece of decoration full of your precious art.
You can do trunks using other measurements like the one I did to hold tags.

How to make a niche for altered book cover

Paint your altered book cover white using latex or acrylic paint.
Cut 3 pieces of an old newspaper the same size of the altered book cover.

Crush one of the pieces, and then uncrush it. Glue the 3 pieces of newspaper one over the other. The uncrushed one will be on the top. Let them dry. Paint both sides white.

Paint the cover with golden acrylic paint.

Paint the pieces of newspaper with golden acrylic paint.

Now cut make 6 cuts on the newspapers piece as seem on the photo. You can age it a little bit using raw sienna acrylic paint or antiquing gel.

Decoupage a picture on the cover or lid.

Roll up and glue the cuts as seen on the photo.

Now glue it on the cover .

An old passion renewed: The Phantom of Opera

I just watched the movie for the 10th time in the last few days. I really can't imagine where I was since 2004 when the movie was released. Maybe all life troubles I faced that year just didn't let me know about it.
I am a huge Phantom fan since my childhood when I saw the 1927 movie with Lon Chaney and the 1943 version with Claude Rains. Of course, I immediately fell in love with the musical and have been listening to Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman or Sarah and Steve all these years.
But now I am completely in love with Gerard Butler as the Phantom, me and 96% of all women in the world. LOL. The hottest man alive singing my all time favorite music with such emotions. I still cannot believe I haven't found it before!!!! Maybe there was a conspiracy to prevent me from seeing the movie!!!Some people knew I would be watching it over and over and would miss my meals an neglect my art.
Well, I will not . I have been creating thousands of Phantom's paintings in my head. I only extra 24 hours a day to paint them.

Step to step to fake wrought brass

Step to step to fake wrought brass

This technique can be used in altered book covers or decoupage boxes lids or wherever you like.
Supplies
Book cover or box lid
A piece of mat board
White PVC glue (Elmer’s)
White latex paint
White dimensional paint
Gold ink
Brown antiquing gel or sepia oil paint

Sand the box lid or book cover. Cut a rectangular or square piece of mat board smaller than the place you are going to glue it. Glue it to cover or lid to make a relief.
Mix white glue with white paint and paint at least 2 coats on the box or cover allowing it to dry between coats.

Take the dimensional paint and do drawings around the glued mat board on the cover or lid. Allow it to dry completely.

Paint the lid or cover with gold ink. I used rub and buff diluted on thinner but you can use any other good gold paint. Let it dry.
Now use your antiquing gel. Put a small amount on a rag and rub it on the entire object. Allow it to enter the creases. Then remove the excess. The creases will be enhanced. Let it darker or lighter. You can also use sepia oil paint.
Now glue a beautiful picture on the relief and varnish the whole piece. You will have a very beautiful object d’art completely fake!

This 5x5 altered book was done using some hard CD covers. They are so hard that the book became like a board book. I used prints of witches from my original oil paintings. As you can see, my witches are colorful and nice. LOL.The cover is decoupage and the embellishment were totally handmade in cold porcelain. Please feel free to post comments !!!!

Altered Book Paper bag "Vintages Cats

Paper bag book instructions

Take 8 paper bags.
Cut them into square shapes, cutting front and back
Get 8 sheets of patterned paper. You can use any kind of paper as gift wrap, printed pages from computer, decoupage, scrapbook paper or even pretty pages from magazines.
Glue the paper to the squares of paper bags.
Make interesting shaped pockets with the same or different paper. Glue them to front and back of every page of the paper bag book. Let it dry completely. I use white glue so I let it dry about 12 hours.
Now you have to bind the book. Put a fine line of glue on the back of the last paper bag in the place where you will form the "spine". Then you glue all the paper bags one onto another till you have the one that will be the cover. You can embellish it as you like.
Now draw a one inch line from the spine with a pencil. This line will help you to fasten it with staples this part to make it solid bound. After doing it, cut a piece of construction paper, embellish it and glue it over the glued paper bags and staples. You can adorn it before gluing. I used two ribbons on the Valentines book and you can seem other models on this blog.
Now you can put whatever you wish inside the book like your collections o ATC/ACEO, love letter, precious photos, bits of journaling, tag art or even some cancelled check (God forbids us to have!)

This is the last altered book am posting for some time. Tomorrow I am going to a hospital to have a surgery. Nothing serious. The doctors need to correct something that is not well inside my belly. Anyway I appreciate your prayers, good thoughts and vibes.
This book is made with 8 brown paper bags, decorated with Brazilian Christmas papers, ribbons, glitter, vintage images of Santas and tags.
These little books are very emotional to me. They strongly remind me of my childhood in a very poor country. I used to decorate brown paper bags to make notebooks to my little brother and to myself. The first altered book I made using brown paper bags were never shown entirely. I just can’t do it. It would be as exposing this part of myself, the child I was and still am inside my heart. And the remembrance of my beloved brother who I rarely see nowadays.

Home made fabric stiffener

Home made fabric stiffener
2 tablespoon white glue
1 tablespoon water
½ tablespoon alcohol

Mix all the ingredient and use immediately. It cannot be kept. Make only the quantity you need to stiff your fabric. Always remember to try it first on rag or scrap.

Altered envelpe book and 10 original mixed media ATC/ACEO

This altered book/leather like chest is made of 10 envelopes. I made 10 original mixed media ACEOs/ATC to go inside the envelopes. The little trunk was made by me using craft foam and then faux finished to look like leather. It stands alone or can put in a purse,handbag or even a pocket. Envelope Book Halloween

I really enjoyed making this envelope book. I cut the envies in a suitable size of 8x 8. Then I did some mixed media acrylic paintings on them and collage on distressed papers. They were originally white. The covers were done with the technique I described below.

Tutorial for background

First grab some magazines. Torn the black and white (written) pages. Glue the scraps to your surface. I use only white glue. When they are dry, rub a cloth with thinner (wear rubber gloves), till the letters are almost faded. Then rub the resulting background with wax bitumen. Polish it, then to the stitches with a liner and acrylic paint. You can do collage or decoupage or leave it as it is.
You can use color pages. The results are a little different. I used color pages on the envelope book and black and white on the journal.

This Altered Book Siamese Cats. It has only prints from my original SIAMESE CAT oil paintings. It s size is 4 ½ x 7 inches.
The cover is done with decoupage techniques, has a Siamese cat cut in cold porcelain and gold and black tassel in thespine. The book is closed with a tiny golden lock and key.Click Here to see this book at eBay
