Altered journal Leather

I used a technique to do the cover I learned from my Brazilian decoupage group. It is very nice when you touch it because it reminds you of leather. I used cone shaped coffee filters, stained wqith coffee, of course. Or you can recycle your used filters, wash them and let them dry. I cut them in irregular pieces, glued to the cover using decoupage techniques, put one coat of varnish. let it dry and then I made the stitches using CD pens ( the ones you use to write on CDs). A large pointed one for the holes and a thin pointed for the stitches. After drying I used 3 coats of acrylic varnish and one coat of oil based one. Hope you can use this technique in your works. It takes about 48 hours to have it done. Please enlarge the pictures to see details.

What a neat looking cover! The stitching looks so real ... I think it's because you drew in the holes, too, instead of just the stitching. What did you stain the coffee filters with? Or were they just coffee stained? It's just beautiful.
